The first of a semi-weekly writeup of new beers on tap around Portland. I really really wanted to call this Beer Around Town but Derek has already grabbed that title for his excellent blog so for now it will be called The Weekly Taps.
Every Wednesday or Thursday I plan to post a list of all the newest beers tapping in PDX. These will focus on the seasonal and one-off beers that are rarely talked about or hyped up and come and go sometimes without anyone ever noticing. I will also mention rare or unique beers. In the future I hope to make this post downloadable and printable as a pdf. for handy reference and it is all brought to you by Taplister.
This week we have new beers from: Alameda, Walking Man, Upright, Old Market, Laurelwood, Mcmenamins, Bear Republic and more.
Let me first recommend everyone try Alameda's new Pilsner/Pale Ale hybrid on tap now called Fixed Gear and the new Sasquatch Legacy Project beer from Walking Man on Friday at the Horse Brass.
The new trending beer style would seem to be chili brews made with hot peppers. They seem to be making a comeback. Personally I find them love or hate beers, some end up picking up a green vegetable flavor and some meld wonderfully with the beer such as Roots Calypso (scotch bonnet peppers and apricots) from a few years ago and Upright Brewing's recent Fatali Four (fruity Fatali peppers) and Turkey On Rye (Turkish Chili's). Looking forward to trying these new additions...

Alameda: Fixed Gear
On tap now @ Alameda Brewing
A single hop single malt beer, all pilsner malt and all Cascade hops. I tried this last night and it tasted like a very hoppy pilsner. Somehow the breadiness of the malt brought out a spiciness in the cascades which are typically more citrusy though it did have that grapefruit rind bite. This is a crisp and dry tasty beer for light beer lovers and hopheads alike.
Mcmenamins Hillsdale: Hot Pepper Pale Crisp
On now @ Hillsdale Mcmenamins
Clean golden ale spiced with Jalapenos & Jabaneros! Delicious! The first taste is cold and carries the flavor of the jalapeno! A second later the jabanero kicks in and your throat begins to tingle and your insides warm up! Not TOO hot, but hot enough to to demand respect! ...A favorite at the Hillsdale!
OG: 1045 TG: 1007 ABV: 4.90 %
Old Market: Hot Tamale
On tap now @ Broadway Grill and Brewery
With real jalapeno and serrano peppers, this is one HOT cold drink! No returns from weenies.
Sasquatch Legacy: Imperial Oatmeal Porter
Tapping Friday 3/26 5pm @ Horse Brass
Malt was donated by Great Western Malting and used Great Western
NW Pale Ale+Munich malts for the base, then added light Crystal and English Chocolate malts to add color and flavor, and flaked oats for mouth feel. The hops are all NW varieties, donated by Hop Union. Columbus, Centennial, Northern Brewer and the new Citra hops were all used in the kettle.
OBC: Dragon Crack
Tapping Wednesday 3/24 @ The Green Dragon
An IPA brewed with English malts and a touch of crystal,
generous amarillo and centennial hop additions and a few ounces of freshly
cracked organic black peppercorn that cause the lingering of hops on the
palette, yet is all but vacant in the aroma and flavor, leaving the hop
bouquet. Quaff!
55 BU, 6 SRM, 6.4 ABV, 15.8 Plato
Lompoc: Steaming Cascade
Tapping Friday 3/26 @ New Old Lompoc NW 4-9pm
copper colored with a frothy white head. Whole leaf Cascade hops put a Northwest twist on a California original. Fermented at 60 degrees with Bavarian lager yeast, Steaming Cascade finishes crisp and dry with a pronounced hoppiness. 5.1% ABV
Upright: Schelde Six
On tap now at the Tasting Room
Part of the 6th barrel series of exclusive to the Tasting Room 5 gallon batches. Each in the series features one of Uprights regular beers only fermented with a completely different yeast then the house strain. This one is the Six dark rye beer fermented with Wyeast's new seasonal Schelde strain which is a belgian yeast purportedly from De Koenig brewery. Look for this on tap at Upright for a very limited time.
Laurelwood: Saison
On tap now @ 51st and Sandy location
Saison, A refreshing spring time ale traditionally brewed in Wallonia, the French-speaking region of Belgium. This cloudy golden-colored ale is brewed with wheat and oats. Despite its spicy character, no actual spices were used in the brewing process. Instead, the typical Belgian character of this beer comes from the yeast during fermentation. OG 12 ABV 5.2% IBUs 12
Bear Republic: 11
Tapping Thursday 3/25 6pm @ East Burn
11 is a double IPA brewed with a blend of American and English malts, our house strain of Scottish ale yeast, and incredible quantities of Amarillo and Summit hops. We think you’ll agree that this beer goes to 11. 8.2% ABV IBU: 100+ Color: Copper
Bear Republic: Rebellion (single hop series) Citra
Tapping Thursday 3/25 6pm @ East Burn
American IPA-Rebellion is a single hop ale brewed to showcase different hop varietals. Citra Hops are featured in this batch. Always brewed with the same malt base and IBUs, the character of the hop really shines through. ABV: 6.0% IBU: varies Color: Golden
Double Mountain: Black Irish Stout
On tap now @ Migration Brewing and Bailey's Taproom
A proper stout to call our own...this brew is a quintessential Double Mountain interpretation of a classic style. Rich, creamy, roasty and beautifully bitter. Poured with a thick head, courtesy of nitrogen.
Brewed with organic Pilsner malt, black, brown crystal malts, roasted barley and Brewers’ Gold hops. 4.5% ABV, 50 BU
Roots: Imperial Porter
On tap now @ Roots Organic Brewing
5th anniversary beer 8.2% ABV and 38 IBUS.
The Bear Republic beers are being released as part of their Hop Fest that has taken place over 3 days at 3 different bars. This is the last of these events and maybe your last chance to try them. Despite my recent write up about Bear Republic and calls to boycott I still recommend trying the 11 and the Rebellion Citra Hop which was especially excellent.

One of the best chili beers I've had is chocolate oaked yeti from Great Divide. A nice hint of cayenne on the finish. It comes out in the summer.
