In the rest of this post you will find a guide to the Hops Fest, along with the first complete beer list for this years event.
As a primer, "SNOB" Ritch has a new video from Behind The Pint on what goes into picking and packaging those fresh hops every year:

More info on the Hood River Hops Fest, and why it dominates, after the jump.
For example, Big Horse Brewing, a small operation in Hood River that doesn't distribute to Portland, has easily one of the best fresh hop beers each year called Vernon the Rabbit Slayer. You may not know this if you haven't been to the fest in Hood River, because I have never seen it available anywhere except once a year at this fest.
Or how about Killer Green from Double Mountain, perhaps the most highly anticipated fresh hop brew in Oregon? The release party for this beer is Tuesday, October 5th at the Bye and Bye in Portland, but this will be your first chance to try it extremely fresh at the HR Hops Fest.

Also adding to the enjoyment is the outdoor location in the heart of downtown Hood River. It's wide open and conveniently located right between both Double Mountain Brewing and Full Sail Brewing. Each is literally a minute's walk from the fest grounds. There is plenty of food and a number of vendors showing off their arts and crafts, all of which provides a welcome distraction and change of pace than just beer, beer, and more beer.
Unfortunately, because of location constraints, the PDX Fresh Hop Tastival is now located at Oaks Park in a covered tent. If you can't make it to Hood River then I do still recommend hitting up the Portland fest, but the out of the way location, lack of public transportation, and enclosed and bare-bones event space make for a pretty sterile fest. The beer, however, does go a long way in making up for it.

Thanks for posting the beer list Ezra. I had been trying to track it down online without much luck. The weather looks awesome for this weekend. Should be a great time. As for the Portland festival, aside from the public transportation difficulties, I like the Oaks Park venue. There is plenty of grass outside of the tent to enjoy the brews and the view.
ReplyDeleteI thought the Oaks Park setting was excellent last year -- lots of trees around and a river view. It's a great bike ride also if the weather is nice. Public transportation is one thing, but I even hate driving there.
ReplyDeleteWere you guys at a different fest than I was? When I first heard it was going to be at Oaks Park last year I was stoked but then we were all kept under a small tent that you couldnt even see out of or bring your beer outside.
ReplyDeleteI also dig biking but thats further then I wish to bike ride after drinking a lot.
They let us out of the tent -- we even had kids and balloons out there. Lots of people brought their beers out to the lawn south of the festival tent.
ReplyDeleteIt's not that far of a bike ride for you, right? Not as far as, say, Saraveza. And 2.5 or 3 miles of it would be on the Springwater Trail. Pretty sweet depending on the weather.
@Bill,
ReplyDeleteHmm, I guess because I went to the fresh hop tastival preview it must have been different than the non preview, that sounds much cooler being able to walk around.
Yeah I dont like to bike to Saraveza either, usually go there when I am already close being at Upright. But still I would drink a hell of a lot more at a trip to the fresh hop fest. Not that its not doable but I would rather not.
Regardless, the Hood River fest rules all.
Notice my epic photobomb in the picture with Jimmy and Angelo. Wish I could make it to this fest this year, as it is easily one of my top five of the year, but I will be tailgating and cheering on my Beavers. See most of you at Oaks Park.
