"Compressed, intimate, hyper social and bike based"
- Hopworks owner Christian Ettinger on the upcoming Bike Bar

As originally reported here on The New School, and more recently rumored on Eater PDX, Hopworks Urban Brewery has confirmed they will be opening a 2nd location in North Portland. Dubbed the 'Bike Bar', it will be located on the N. Wlliams bike route just one building down from Lompoc's 5th Quadrant Location.

The freshly-signed new lease means a new stop for families and bicyclists traveling down what is said to be the busiest street for bike traffic in the state. Capitalizing on the supportive bike culture, the new location will feature a bike canopy with custom made frames from Oregon Bike Constructors. The brewery has committed to making a 30th Anniversary tribute beer for next door neighbors the United Bicycle Institute, and is also planning a new small brewfest in the 50 X 100 sf bonus space behind the new location. Owner/Brewer Christian Ettinger suggests the concept for this festival will be something:
Hopworks - life in the fast lane.
"Unique and never before seen in Portland".
The pub itself will not have its own brewery and will be a smaller and more compact space than the main Hopworks location, but it is housed in a building that aims for Net Zero Energy, meaning they will try to generate as much energy as they consume with 20 kW solar panels lining the roof to provide electricity for the building. In front of the pub will be a covered outdoor patio with 30 seats that will provide a perfect view for watching the bike traffic out front. Behind the pub will be a beer garden that seats 40, as well as the alleyway for up coming festivals and other events. The Bike Bar's menu will consist of the brewpub staples of burgers and pizza, but they are also developing a list of bike-friendly food items to go.

When asked whether there was any controversy regarding the new location's proximity to neighboring brewpub Lompoc 5th Quadrant, owner Christian Ettinger echoed the sentiments of Publican Don Younger:

"I think that when you create an area with multiple draws, it's a rising tide".
So, when can you expect to grab a pint and some bike friendly food to go on your way home? The target opening date is sometime in the middle of May, in time for the summer cycling season.
