Pelican Brewery Announces new Collaboration Beer, Expansion & More
Our friends at Pelican Brewery on the Oregon coast have announced some exciting new developments, including a brand new bottled beer brewed in collaboration with Red Rock Brewing Co of Salt Lake City, Utah. Also among the news is a brewery expansion, a new brewers dinner, spring seasonal releases, and a food and beer festival in Seaside.
From the press release:
CoHOPeration Ale is a first-ever collaboration brew with the Pelican Pub & Brewery and Red Rock Brewing Company in Salt Lake City, Utah. Both previous “Large Brewpub of the Year” winners at the GABF, the idea for this beer came about while Darron Welch and Kevin Templin were judging at the North American Beer Awards in 2011.
The concept for this beer is to be very hoppy, with the hop bitterness and profile of an IPA, but with the hop character of a pilsner. Cleanness of the flavor profile will come from fermenting with lager yeast. Added spiciness will complement the malt character by including malted rye. A unique hybridization of existing beer styles has created something completely new and different.
“This was a great opportunity to create something new and different, yet with clear stylistic and historical roots, to learn by working with each other, and to just have a lot of fun making beer, which is an industry core value!
CoHOPeration was bottled on February 29 and will be available soon in bottle and on draft, although an exact date has not yet been determined.
Pelican Brewery Expands
Two new Metalcraft tanks, a 30 bbl fermenter and a 24 bbl bright beer tank, have been installed at the Pelican and will increase brewing capacity by over 700 barrels per year. These are the first of five tanks being installed as part of this year’s expansion. Subsequent brewery improvements will include a new steam boiler system, new heat exchanger, new labeler, new hot and cold liquor tanks, and one more 30 bbl fermenter.
Pelican to Participate in Seaside, Oregon’s “Pouring at the Coast” Food and Beer Festival March 16 & 17
The event begins Friday, March 16, with a Brewer’s Dinner at McKeown’s Restaurant and Bar. Tickets for the dinner are $45. Call 503 738-6391 for tickets or more information. The Pelican will be pairing Doryman’s Dark Ale with a white bean bratwurst chili for the first course.

Spring Seasonals Riptide Red and Nestucca ESB available on draft and in bottle
Inspired by the traditional red ales of Ireland, Riptide Red has a beautiful dark copper color and a medium bodied presence. This seasonal has a malt aroma reminiscent of toffee, caramel, and cocoa with a subtle floral bouquet. The lush aroma gives way to a full, rounded malty flavor with caramel notes, and a smooth, well-balanced finish. Riptide Red is our tribute to Irish Heritage!
Copper-hued and medium bodied, Nestucca ESB features an English-inspired herbal, floral, and grassy aroma balanced with a toasted bread and toffee-like malt flavor. A subtle fruitiness merges with biscuit-like flavors and a clean, hoppy finish to make this beer both refreshing and full of character. Dry hoped for a delightful fresh hop aroma!
Pelican to Feature Special Menu for St. Patrick’s Day
Come to the beach for an authentic “Irishman’s Breakfast”, Irish Coddle, Shepherd’s Pie, or Corned Beef and Cabbage. Available March 15-21, these dishes are best enjoyed with a glass or Riptide Red, which might even be on cask!
