Announcing a new website relaunch and new regular contributors
Most of all, we are excited to announce two new writers to our team of regular contributors: Bill Night of the It's Pub Night blog, who will be writing a new monthly column called "Piss and Vinegar," and professional freelance beer writer Brian Yaeger, who will write about whatever eccentric subject or recent beer travails he has gotten into.
Welcome to a completely different look for The New School that eschews the traditional top to bottom blog format in favor of a main menu landing page that takes more inspiration from web magazines. This new design allows you to choose your own adventure, so to speak. Readers can now choose from categories like News, Events, Reviews, and Videos, depending on what kind of content they are looking for. The articles will then appear below the main heading slideshow. We are also still working out additional features like the Beer City Guides that appear on the lower right sidebar.
Appearing today on The New School is Brian Yaeger's first story ,featuring a look back at the dozens of breweries he has visited. 2012 A Year in Review We also have a new story about Magic Hat Brewing's beers, which are becoming available in Oregon for the first time. Check back on the site tomorrow for Bill Night's first column, "Beer Confusion," focusing on the lack of education of staff members at some beer bars and breweries.
Please stay with us through 2013 as we work to make The New School better than ever. Have a complaint, suggestion, or beer tip? I am all ears, drop me a line at SamuraiArtist@NewSchoolBeer.com anytime.
Lastly, I would like to thank our new sponsors. Without them The New School would not be possible, so please patronize them:
Double Mountain Brewery, Saraveza and their new Bad Habit Room, Hopworks Urban Brewery, and Lardo.
Also the sometimes overlooked work from The New School's longtime contributors "SNOB" Ritch Marvin and "ElGordo" Feighner.
Bill "Fresh Hop Fuhrer" Night
For the last several years Bill Night has been writing a Portland-centric beer blog called It's Pub Night, named after the ritual weekly phone call or email rounding up friends for a night out: "Hey, it's pub night!" Despite his advanced age, he is lending a hand to The New School with a monthly rant called "Piss and Vinegar". The name of the column comes from the British colloquial phrase "taking the piss" -- making fun -- and the sour character of the Bill's rants. He will continue to maintain It's Pub Night, and he invites you to take a look at some of the fun things over there, like the Beer Review Generator, the Portland Beer Price Index, and the Six-Pack Equivalent Calculator.
Brian Yaeger is the author of Red, White, and Brew: An American Beer Odyssey. He contributed to the Oxford Companion to Beer and writes for All About Beer, Draft Magazine, CraftBeer.com, Portland Monthly, Willamette Week, and more. He earned a Master in Professional Writing (with a thesis on beer). Other than GABF, his favorite, can't-miss event is the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Fest, where he's drawn to any band with a tuba. Along with his wife, Half Pint, he runs Inn Beervana Bed & Beer in Portland, where he also lives with his baby boy I.P.Yae, and German Shorthair Pointer, Dunkel.
