The New School first broke the news of Astoria's 4th brewery, River Barrel Brewing, in July with little info leaked. Recently the owners revealed more info and a new name - Buoy Beer Company.
Astoria's 4th brewery will join Fort George, Astoria Brewing, and Hondo's, and looks to be a serious operation for the get-go. Five main founders and fewer than 20 investors are taking over the old New England Fish Company cannery at 42 Seventh St. with a 20 barrel brewery with 40 barrel tanks. They have also hired Kevin Shaw, previously Head Brewer at Bridgeport Brewing, to oversee a lineup of ales and lagers and hope to send lots of beer to Portland and Seattle.
Taking up 10,000 square feet in a 44,000 sq. ft. building, the owenrs plan to have a taproom and bar that features the fresh seafood that the coastal town is known for. Located across the street from the fishing boats and viewing platform on Sixth Street, it sounds like the location makes maximum use of Astoria's historical beauty.
Luke Colvin, an investor who manages Arbor Care Tree Specialists, will serve as CEO of the new company. Joining him as owners are Andrew Bornstein, owner of Bornstein Seafoods; Dave Kroening, who has experience in beer and marketing; Dan Hamilton, a veteran home brewer; and Jerry Kasinger, who will serve a business advisor and manage finances. They have also brought on Whole Brain Creative as an advisor. It's clear this business has big plans and a professional team to accomplish its goals.
The next Astoria beer destination, Buoy Beer Company, is hoping to have a grand opening by January 2014.
