(Building plans for Culmination Brewing's brewpub front)
The rate of new breweries opening in the greater Portland metro area is set to continue at a fast pace in 2014, starting off with eight soon to open that are profiled here. Not all are ambitious--some are nanobrewers, others are production breweries with bottling plans and tasting rooms, and there's even another gluten-free brewer adding to the variety. There are even more new breweries in the works than included here; my criteria for this list was that they all have leases signed and OLCC paperwork filed.
Old Castle Brewing (Hillsboro)
Maybe the first brewery inspired by a historical re-enactors club, Old Castle Brewing is starting up as a nano in Hillsboro by an old Army man, Allen Marc Levy, who is now a Captain in the Army Reserves. Originally planned as a 7bbl brewery, things changed when Allen's business partner backed out, forcing him to start out on a 1bbl as he works to secure financing to upgrade. As far as the name goes, Allen describes its etymology: "The name comes from a household name in the SCA called Old Castle. Look them up at www.sca.org. In a nut shell, the SCA is a reenactment society based on the Middle Ages. A household is a group of people that play together and the House of Old Castle was a group that took me in and let me play with them a long time ago." Follow Old Castle's progress on Facebook.
Royale Brewing Co. (Northeast Portland)
A long time coming, Royale Brewing Co. is finally becoming a reality with a liquor licence application for its upcoming space in the
Royale Brewing Co is founded by the same three guys who own Green Bottling, Oregon's first mobile bottling company. In the interim of getting their new space built out, drains installed and a brewhouse delivered, they have placed a 20 and 30bbl fermenter of their own at Alameda to begin brewing there under the consultation of brewer-about-town Dave Fleming. Royale Brewing beers will be available in both draft and bottle soon, with the Royale brewhouse planned to come online closer to the end of the year. The owners hope to operate a "pop-up" tasting room 3 or so days a week when they get moved in to their space at 55 NE Farragut. Follow the progress on their Facebook page.

Baerlic Brewing Co. (Southeast Portland)
Because the inner southeast Portland neighborhood is terribly underserved for craft breweries and beer bars, two homebrewers--Ben Parsons and Rik Hall--are coming to the rescue opening Baerlic Brewery & Taproom 3 blocks away from The Beermongers and 4 blocks away from The Commons Brewery. Taking up residence in the lamented late Kettlemen's Bagels space next to Blitz Ladd, the Baerlic Brewery will operate on a 10bbl brewhouse. The taproom won't be a full-on brewpub, but the owners will still aim to sell nearly all of their beer in house. Imagine a warm cozy bar without any TVs and offering cheese and charcuterie plates for snacks in an inviting atmosphere that begs for you to hang out for awhile. And, if you're wondering what "Baerlic" means, it's a reference to "Barley" in Olde English. Look for Baerlic beers this spring and for a larger writeup with pictures on The New School shortly.
Uptown Market (Beaverton)
Owner AJ Shepard and crew have successfully transitioned this bottleshop/growler fill station/homebrew shop, Uptown Market, into Beaverton's first brewery using a 7bbl brewhouse acquired from Sherwood, Oregon's 2 Kilts Brewing and their assistant, Jason Rowley, as the Uptown head brewer. So far Uptown Brewery has produced The Stop Work Stout-, an Irish dry stout; Uptown Session Ale, an India Session Ale; and the Otis Reddin Imperial Oatmeal Red, as well as a test batch of ESB. Uptown's beers will be available at the shop, of course, but also in select Portland and Hillsboro accounts on draft.

Culmination Brewing (Southwest Portland)
Tomas Sluiter has long been behind the scenes at the often-overlooked Old Market Brewing in Multnomah Village, as well as being active in homebrewing circles. While Old Market has never been interested in showcasing quality or interesting beers, Tomas's new project, Culmination Brewing, will do just that in the underserved Goose Hollow neighborhood off SW 16th and Jefferson. First reported by The New School back in April 2013, Culmination has gone through some issues with its location and funding, but has finally ironed out the issues and is moving along. With the lease signed and both a brewhouse and a sake brewery currently being fabricated, Culmination Brewing will be something a little different. When finished, expect a production brewery with a commercial kitchen leased to a catering company to provide food, as well as plans to team up with the Oregon Culinary Institute on beer and food pairing classes.
StormBreaker Brewing (North Portland)
The New School first broke the news last September that Amnesia Brewing would shuffle off its original Mississippi avenue coil, only to become StormBreaker Brewing. Since then I have had a chance to hang out with the new owner/brewer, Rob Lutz, who you may already know from his stints around town bartending at Cascade Barrel House and Produce Row. I also got to try the first impressive batches of his new IPA and dry-hopped red, both of which are debuting before the brewery does this Thursday, 1/23, at Concordia Alehouse, along with a new stout. StormBreaker is targeting a February 1st reopening date with a reimagined all-ages space and more food options.
Area 503 Brewing (Beaverton)
Homebrewer Chris Liles and partner and future Head Brewer Matt Machado from Above The Rest Homebrewing plan to open a 2bbl brewery out of Chris'd garage. With plans to upgrade to a 4bbl production brewery with a tasting room similar to Boneyard Brewing's, they are currently working on TTB permits. They plan to become the 2nd brewery in Beaverton while selling to the previously mentioned first--Uptown Market, as well as the newl- opened The Growlerie. The beer styles will be all over the place, but Chris would like to see them with a slightly higher abv than the norm.
Owner and brewer Daniel McIntosh-Tolle was diagnosed with Celiac disease 6 years ago and has been homebrewing gluten-free beer for the last 3. Moonshrimp Brewing may be the first nano gluten-free brewery and will be Portland's second dedicated gluten-free brewer. Moonshrimp Brewing is strange in more ways than that, though; it comes from the increasingly rarified class of successful Kickstarter funding campaigns, raising more than the $24,000 goal. The name Moonshrimp Brewing comes from what Daniel, a trained biochemist, sees when he looks at the moon: "while most people see a man's face, I have always seen a shrimp laying on a cracker." Moonshrimp Brewing has its lease, TTB, and OLCC licenses and is just waiting on some city water/sewer permits. Oh, and did we mention the future brewery home has a giant purple octopus on top of it?

Honorable Mention: Ex Novo Brewing
As mentioned back in July, Ex Novo is a non-profit charitable brewery in the works looking to open in Portland. The owners recently applied for a liquor license at what they hoped would be their home in a development right next to The Beermongers in inner southeast Portland, but that lease negotiation promptly fell through. With a head brewer hired, the crew already has a lead on a new space and when they sign a lease, we will be back to report it.
