After recently being named Willamette Week’s 2015 Bar of the YearStammtisch has a lot to celebrate this Spring for their 1st anniversary in conjunction with a new Maifest party on Saturday, May 2nd. Stammtisch immediately established itself as being on the top of the list of German-style bars and restaurants in Portland when they opened last May of 2014.

If you have not yet visited Stammtisch, a few words:

I knew from the moment I sat down at the Stammtisch bar the day they had opened that it would be good, perhaps a new classic. The bar has the atmosphere and design of a prohibition era tavern opened by German immigrants. The bar and restaurant has a polished level of class and authenticity that makes similar attempts by the likes of First National Taphouse and Thirsty Lion (yes I know the aforementioned are not German) feel fake and cheap. The beer list is sublime, and that’s coming from someone who is not a huge German beer fan, both the variety and obscure selections of the list intrigue while classics stand by. By that point the food could be all deep fried tofu and I would be ok with it but owner Dan Hart (of Prost! and Interurban bar as well) has taken the entire product seriously with an eye and a taste for authentic accuracy. In the end it’s still a bar ran by Americans simulating a Portlanders take on a German gastropub and if your expecting transplants with an accent you might be disappointed. For most of us though –Stammtisch feels like a cozy neighborhood establishment with an exciting and lovingly composed glance into another countries dining and drinking experience.
