Upright Brewing & Ruse Brewing Tap Takeover
This Friday, April 14th, two of my favorite local farmhouse breweries, Upright Brewing and Ruse Brewing, are doing a joint tap takeover with their new collaboration brew, ‘Sun Circles,’ at Lombard House. Upright Brewing represents the old school of Portland farmhouse brewers, and you could call Shaun Kalis’s Ruse the new school. The breweries’ new collab ‘Sun Circes’ is actually a blend of beers from both breweries, barrel-aged together with nectarines and wild yeast.
Lombard House is a contender for best new beer bar, a great spot in far North Portland opened in September 2016 by bartender-about-town Brian Koch. It’s a small indoor house looking space with deck and backyard beer garden and some very well selected draft beers. Check out the taplist and more on “Sun Circles” below.
Upright/Ruse: Sun Circles is a 50/50 split of light saisons, each aged in a single wine cask with fresh nectarines and Ruse’s house brettanomyces yeast. The idea was born from a mutual admiration of each other’s work and a love of fruit beers and saisons with balanced flavors. The Sun Circles opens with a deep aroma of ripe nectarines, followed by light yet distinct malt flavors and an attractive and appetizing blend of esters and phenolics. The beer is drinking great now and we encourage folks to enjoy it within the year, while the fruit shows brightly. Only 48 bottles of this 5% abv beer were made for Upright’s tasting room-only Sole Composition bottle series. The keg available at Lombard House is one of only two, the other at Saraveza was poured at the Portland Farmhouse & Wild Ale Festival.
Ruse Brewing beers:
Noctuary is a pinot barrel aged sour black ale conditioned with our house brettanomyces and bacteria cultures. 6.5%abv
4th Kind is a hazy NE style oatmeal pale ale dry-hopped with citra and simcoe. 6%abv
Upright Brewing beers:
Pale Ale is a style we like to brew from time to time, as the few of us managing production at Upright all enjoyed making (and drinking) them long before we started here. This release uses a blend of classic and modern hops – centennial, cascade, citra, and denali, in an extra light and dry base. 5.7%
Phantom Ghost, a collaborative saison made with upcoming brewery Level Beer, was formulated to be a well balanced brew with herbal and perfumey hops contrasting a fruity yeast strain that generated attractive fresh orange flavors in our most shallow open fermenter. Those perfume and fruity notes may smell sweet but are only an illusion, as the beer finishes quite dry, still maintaining some body thanks to a bit of rolled spelt incorporated into the grist. 7.2%
Oyster Stout is back as always for the tail end of winter. The recipe remains unchanged, incorporating 8 dozen oysters and 8 gallons of oyster “juice”, both courtesy of Hama Hama, in a robust stout. The unique qualities of the oysters are on display in the nose with a deep, umami type aroma, while the finish has just enough salt and minerality to distinguish it from ordinary stouts. 6.2%
