Schilling Cider House Portland at the Goat Blocks

Seattle-based Schilling Cider Co. is opening its 3rd taproom–Schilling Cider House Portland, billed as having the largest draft cider list in the country–this Friday, June 16th. The new taproom is located in the Goat Blocks development at SE 8th and Belmont. along with Market of Choice and Chipotle, within view of Cascade Barrel House.

Schilling Cider House Portland features fifty hard cider taps from a variety of northwest and far reaching cideries, not just Schilling’s own brand. Manager/cidermaker Jennie Dorsey of the Pomme Boots Society has curated a taplist with equal attention given to Spanish and Belgian-style ciders, as well as those from the Pacific Northwest. While the taproom won’t produce its own cider, it will have a barrel room where Jennie will sour her own cider and make special blends for the taproom.

Among the fifty taps, Schilling Cider House will have a nitro cider tap and a small selection of bottles and cider six-packs. Gluten-intolerant folks will be stoked to find the small kitchen will be gluten-free, with a small menu that will slowly ramp up and include items like fried zucchini, corn dogs, and tater-tots served multiple ways with tons of toppings.

Outside of having the largest draft selection of cider and in-house cider blends, the big draw for this location might be a sweet outdoor patio with a gas fire pit and an elevated view of the neighborhood. Also, because it’s just across the walkway from a public marketplace with outdoor seating, you will be able to drink a cider on the walkway while grabbing food from Market of Choice. While the Cider House is 21+, the outdoor public patio is all-ages and you can purchase a cider in the taproom and bring it outside.

Owner Colin Shilling has hard cider in his lineage; in 1881 his great-great-grandfather, August, founded the Schilling Spice Company in San Francisco. Colin thinks of Schilling Cider as a continuation of those core values by pairing the fair prices and innovative techniques of spice blending with cider-making. It seems to have worked out because according to the press materials, Schilling Cider is the #1 top selling craft cider. Now available in twenty states, Oregon is already the brand’s second largest market and plans to continue the huge growth of its Auburn, Washington-produced ciders.

Schilling Cider House Portland opens this Friday, June 16th and will be offering 500 free growlers with the purchase of their first fill. The pub will be open 11am – 11pm Sunday – Thursday and 11am – Midnight on Friday and Saturday.
