New Haven-style Pizza on Tap for new Eugene Brewery “The Wheel Apizza Pub”

By  |

A new pizza brewpub is planning to open in Eugene, Oregon’s inner eastside of the Whiteaker neighborhood with East Coast New Haven-style pies and classic brewpub staples like lagers and yes, New England-style IPA. “The Wheel Apizza Pub” marks the return of modest but classic brewpub greatness in a small package, making quality food and beer for consumption within it’s four walls and without aspirations to become a production brewery with packaging. The team behind “The Wheel APizza Pub” is made of three all-star veterans of Eugene’s food and drink scene, Steve Mertz founder of the Whiteaker neighborhoods Tacovore, Trevor Ross founding brewer of Claim 52 Brewing and Tobias Schock, former head brewer at Agrarian Ales.

I met up with Tobias for a brief tour of the space that will become The Wheel, fans of Wildcraft Cider may be familiar with the building as the space is their former home of the cideries production and restaurant. It’s an intimate space but in an up and coming neighborhood of Eugene and provides enough room for a new 7 bbl direct fire brewery from Practical Fusion, HLT, Mash/Lauter Tun with three FV unitanks and 6 brite tanks. Plus a high-temp Italian made Cuppone brick floor oven for pizza and a freight elevator to an upstairs level with space for future barrel-aging wild ale projects. Yes, Tobias won’t be leaving behind his farmhouse roots at Agrarian Ales completely behind, unlike at Agrarian, this space has some temperature control and room to better control the yeasts, bacteria, fermentation and other factors in determining what a beer will taste like that were often left up to chance at the super rustic Agrarian Ales.

“The pizza is inspired by New Haven apizza, because its the best!” says Schock, who notes they will make their own Eugene version with naturally leavened crust and using locally grown and milled flour.  They will keep a tight list of available pizzas and beers, preferring to specialize in their favorite styles of pie and beer that go well together with additional rotating seasonal flavors.

“Quality is the name of the game; epic ingredients in both beer and pizza, with succinct selection of choices of each,” says Schock.

The Wheel Apizza Pub plans to open as soon as late 2017. We promise many more details in the near future but thought this tidbit of info may keep your mouths watering until then.

Please make sure you also sell Foxon Park sodas (root beer, cream soda, birch beer…).
