The ominous-sounding Black Water will be Portland’s first metal-themed vegetarian brewery, coming soon to NE Broadway. The brewpub is an off-shoot project of Black Water Records and is being launched by owner Keith Testerman and homebrewers Devin Shollenberger and Alex Carroccio

To be located at 835 NE Broadway in a building that has been the home of a series of  Vietnamese restaurants, Black Water Brewing will be a burger and fries kind of joint, only it will be fully vegetarian. A large brewery won’t fit into this 3,662 sq. ft. space–only about 1,000 of those are for the brewery–but the crew is looking at a 3.5 barrel system that might barely eek out enough beer for the pub.

Cole Robinson, a local chef who has designed vegetarian menus for the likes of The White Owl Social Club,. will be behind the grill. Behind the bar will be a pretty standard lineup of ales like pales, reds, IPAs, and stouts, not to mention a full liquor bar.

Portland already has a vegan strip club, yet somehow this will be our first vegetarian or first metal-themed brewery, leaving us work to do as we attempt to catch up to Denver’s two(!) metal-themed breweries.

Expect Black Water Brewing to be open around the end of November, but probably not pouring its own housemade beer until some time after.

835 Broadway is not Hollywood. That’s squarely in the Lloyd District.

Starting up comes with surprises. By now I’ve learned that “opening soon” is a unit of time roughly equivalent to one year, give or take. For their sake—or anyone else’s—I hope they are on the “take” side.
