The 2nd annual Best of Craft Beer Awards were judged last weekend in Bend, and the winners were announced Monday. Any U.S. brewery licensed by the TTB is welcome to submit beers to this new beer award program, the only one that I know of in Oregon for professional brewers across the country (until the Oregon Beer Awards premieres next month). Among the winners were new breweries like Bend’s Wild Ride Brewing with a Silver Medal for Bitch Stout and a Bronze Medal for Mount Up Maple Brown. Ecliptic Brewing somehow won both a Bronze and a Silver in different categories for its amazingly tasty Orange Giant Bourbon Barrel-Aged Barleywine. Perennial award winners Pelican Brewing won Gold for Stormwatcher’s Winterfest, Silver for MacPelican’s Wee Heavy, Bronze for Silverspot IPA, and Gold for Kiwanda Cream Ale. Breakside Brewery continued its local winning spree, this time with Wanderlust IPA winning Gold instead of the GABF gold medal winning flagship IPA. Breakside also got a Gold for the not yet even released Lunch Break ISA and a Silver for the New World Bruin, out in bottles now. Of course, there were many other great Oregon award winners from the likes of Bend locals Worthy Brewing, Bend Brewing, Deschutes and GoodLife. Also, we must mention the surprise winner from Denver, Colorado for “Brewery of the Year” going to River North Brewing.
