Widmer Brothers Hefeweizen New Official Craft Beer of the Timbers & New Packaging

Widmer Brothers Brewing, longtime supporters of Portland’s soccer club, announced that its flagship Hefeweizen is now the official craft beer of the Portland Timbers. With the announcement came the debut of new green and gold packaging for all Hefeweizen sold within Oregon. A couple of interesting little tidbits I found on the label includes the “official craft beer” statement–kind of a funny fuck you to the Brewers Association, which does not consider Widmer to be craft beer. I also like the little blurb about Widmer Hefe being “The Original American Hefeweizen,” as perhaps the Portland brewery’s largest claim to fame.

Here is the official press release:

PORTLAND, Ore. – March 6, 2015 – Widmer Brothers Brewing and the Portland Timbers today announced the largest co-branded product launch between a craft brewery and a Major League Soccer (MLS) team. The best-selling craft beer in Oregon – Widmer Brothers Hefeweizen – is now “The Official Craft Beer of the Portland Timbers” and will feature Portland Timbers co-branded packaging for the entire 2015 MLS Season.

Widmer Brothers and the Portland Timbers have been partners for more than 15 years, and the two organizations announced a four-year renewal of their partnership today. In addition to co-branded Hefe packaging, the Widmer Brothers Southern Front at Providence Park will soon feature new prominent Hefe in-stadium signage and field-level LED board displays. Most notably, the southwest corner of the stadium will feature a 16-foot tall Hefe glass.

“My brother Kurt and I, as well as many of our brewers and other members of our team, are longtime fans of the Portland Timbers,” said Rob Widmer, co-founder of Widmer Brothers Brewing. “We are excited to continue our partnership and bring together two Portland originals for beer drinkers and soccer fans in Oregon with the Timbers and Hefe co-branded package. The Timbers are a great Portland institution, and we’re happy to continue our support and association with the team.”

The co-branded Hefe and Portland Timbers packaging will be featured on 6-packs and 12-packs in Oregon from now through the close of the 2015 MLS Season.

About Hefeweizen
Widmer Brothers Hefe (pronounced: “Hay-fa”) began as an improvisation inspired by brothers Kurt and Rob’s love of German style beers. Brewed with golden wheat, Hefe’s unique cloudy appearance, bold flavors and citrus notes defined the American style Hefeweizen. Multiple awards and nearly three decades later, Hefe remains the gold standard and Oregon’s favorite craft beer. Prost, to the Original!

World Beer Cup gold award winner in 2004, 2008 and 2014. Great American Beer Festival gold medal winner in 1998 and 2006, and silver medal winner in 2014.
