The New School is a proud supporter of the Brews For New Avenuescharity rare beer festival in 2015, raising money for homeless and at-risk youth through promoting some of the best craft beer on earth. This year’s festival and charity auction event will be held on Saturday, September 12, at the Leftbank Annex, with one of the best selections of rare beer gathered together in one place that I have ever seen. The no-profit rare beer festival boasts the city’s only live auction of unique craft beers, and this year features bottles brewed exclusively for the event.
Uniting under the slogan “Great beer for a great cause,” breweries throughout Europe, the USA, and Oregon continue to support BFNA and the festival’s mission of helping foster and homeless youth realize their potential. Last year’s event attracted 600 attendees and raised over $36,000 for services for youth. Now in its fourth year, New Avenues for Youth’s ambassador board hopes to expand the festival’s reputation as a must-attend event for beer enthusiasts.
This year’s top auction item is a bottle of Grote Dorst 2008 Oude Geuze Magnum. The famous lambic café, Grote Dorst, bottled the blend after its 2008 event, “The Night of the Great Thirst,” and only 15 magnums were ever released. The live auction also features rare bottles from Cantillon, Toppling Goliath, and de Garde. Brews for New Avenues attendees will also be able to enjoy more than 30 keg tappings of incredible craft beers from Cantillon, De Molen, and De Struise alongside domestic favorites including Victory, Block 15, Reverend Nat’s, The Commons and more. Other highlights include the “Wall of Beer” (pay $10, select a mystery bottle), chocolate stout beer floats, food from Pulehu Pizza and Koi Fusion, and live music from Talking Heads tribute band – Life During Wartime.
New Avenues for Youth takes a complete approach to addressing youth homelessness and its root causes, delivering support, and resources that enable foster, at-risk, and homeless youth aged 14-24 to overcome their barriers and realize their potential.
