5 Big Beer Releases This Weekend in Portland

In addition to today’s release of Rye Whiskey barrel-aged The Abyss and Cognac barrel-aged The Abyss, tomorrow, Saturday, January 16th, sees the release of Upright Brewing’s Fantasia, Ecliptic Brewing’s Bourbon Barrel-aged Oort Imperial Stout, and Firestone Walker’s Nitro Merlin Stout release party at Roscoe’s.

Already one of the most anticipated beer releases of the year, Deschutes Brewery has special Rye Whiskey and Cognac Barrel-aged versions of The Abyss being released at the Portland pub today, Friday, 1/15, at 11am. In addition to bottles for sale (with a 3 bottle per person limit), there will be a food pairing special. A very limited amount of bottles of each will be available at specialty retailers.

For those of you who adore The Abyss and look forward to its release each year, we have a special treat for you. The Abyss Rye & The Abyss Cognac! These two remarkably rare releases are 100% barrel-aged in their respective barrels. Most of the Rye Whiskey barrels came from Willett Distillery out of Bardstown, Kentucky (go and visit them if you ever get the chance, tell them Gina from Deschutes says hello) and at 13+% ABV, this version packs a punch. The incredibly old Cognac barrels are from France, and according to Barrelmaster, Jake Harper, impart an interesting sour-like characteristic to The Abyss and is just around 12% ABV.

John Harris is owning barrel-aged bourbon beers. He made some of the first during his long tenure at Full Sail, including the Black Gold and Top Sail series,and is bringing back the best with Oort Barrel-aged Imperial Stout. This isn’t a partially barrel-aged beer like The Abyss or aged for just a few months, but has been in the barrel for more than a year. For fans of bourbon flavors, this beer will delight.
