Breakside Brewery Top Medal Winner of the 2016 World Beer Cup

Breakside wins World Beer Cup medals
Over the weekend we reported that 16 Oregon Breweries took home 19 medals at the 2016 World Beer Cup, but did not initially notice that Breakside Brewery‘s 4 medals were not only the most in the state but the most for any brewery in the world! Breakside’s 2 silver and 2 bronze medals were more than any other single brewery this year, and equal to Washington state’s total haul. That’s out of 6,596 beers from 1,907 breweries representing 55 countries.

Breakside won silver medals for Smoked Porter and Lunch Break ISA and bronze medals for Will’s Alt and ESB. Breakside is usually known for its two year-round IPAs and other limited-release hoppy beers, including the flagship IPA Wanderlust, India Golden Ale, and Safeword IPA, but it’s good to note that the brewers put the same effort into dozens (over a hundred styles) per year.

Jacob Leonard, Breakside’s Production Manager, said, “We’ve always prided ourselves on making a wide range of beers, and I think this shows that we don’t just make a lot of beers just to make a lot of beers, we put a ton of care into each recipe, and it’s amazing to be recognized for some beers that haven’t gotten as much attention as others have in the past.”
Breweries are only allowed to enter four beers per licensed brewery at maximum into the World Beer Cup, and fewer than 5% of all beers entered earn medals. That is a 1 in 25 chance of winning. Breakside–which has two breweries–entered 8 beers and came out with four medals, which makes the numbers that much more astounding this year.
“It’s such a huge honor to be recognized for a wide range of our beers. Winning any medal these days is so difficult; to have four of our beers float to the top of the pack in their respective categories is an amazing compliment for our team,” said Breakside Brewmaster Ben Edmunds.
Lunch Break ISA is a year-round offering from Breakside Brewery available in 22oz bottles and on draft in Oregon, Washington, Hawaii, Northern California, Colorado, Idaho, British Columbia, and Alberta. Smoked Porter is now on tap at both Breakside Brewery’s locations in NE Portland and in Milwaukie, Oregon until gone. ESB and Will’s Alt are rotating pub special releases that are currently unavailable but will be re-brewed in the next few months.
