John’s Marketplace Now Has Taps and a Draft Beer Bar

Welcome to John's Marketplace!

Welcome to John’s Marketplace!

Portland’s westsiders have long known about John’s Marketplace, with its huge selection of bottled wine, beer, and cider. The big neon sign is a Multnomah Village neighborhood landmark, where the store has been serving customers for decades. The shop’s history goes all the way back to 1923, and a store has been operating out of the current location since 1958, originally as a supermarket, but from the early 1990s, it changed into a “marketplace” specializing in retail wine and beer. The shop has gained an excellent reputation for its wide and deep selection of wines and beers.

Rob and Paul Petros are currently running John’s, and have been for a few months now. Their biggest change to date was a remodeling of the deli area in front, where customers could sit down and enjoy a sandwich or burger. Space was cleared right next to the deli counter and a bar top installed. The new bar, dubbed Taps @ John’s Marketplace, features a selection of six beers on draft. The look of the bar is clean and simple, and it’s a fine stop before or after browsing and shopping from John’s huge selection of beer and wine. In addition to beers on tap, bottles purchased on-premise can also be opened (by bar staff, please) and enjoyed at the bar, and bonus: no “cappage” fee.

The in-store Multnomah Deli, a popular feature at John’s, is still operating, with good burgers and sandwiches at reasonable prices. John’s was already a nice place to have a bottled beer with lunch; now, draft beer is also on the menu. A deli burger and a draft beer is satisfying in all the right ways.

John’s is already well-known for regular bottled wine and beer tasting events. With the new Taps bar, draft beer will be added, too. John’s was a featured retailer when Founders Brewing came to the Portland market, with a Founders tap takeover on Friday, February 10. For folks in Southwest Portland, an already great beer retailer has stepped up its game. Best of all, John’s can order and sell kegs to go, a great idea for parties as the season warms up.
