Gigantic Brewing Taps New England-style IPA Collaboration Aged in Sake Barrels

Gigantic Brewing is releasing its 2nd New England-style IPA, this one a collaboration with Japanese brewery Tamamura Honten Brewery called “Kagami-Biraki IPA.” Making it even more unique, this beer was aged in Sake barrels at the brewery in Nagano, Japan. The beer will be pouring on draft at the Gigantic Brewing taproom only, starting today, Thursday, September 14th. The bottles pictured are not for sale here, though.

More info from the press release:

Ben traveled to Japan to participate in the Shiga Kogen Snow Monkey Beer Festival in the spring. The festival is the brainchild of Tamamura Honten owner/brewmaster Eigo Sato.  The event featured live bands and djs, along with beer from craft brewers around Japan and American brewers Gigantic, Hair of the Dog, Jester King and Oxbox. While there Eigo and Ben brewed Kagami-Biraki IPA.

Kagami-Biraki IPA is a New England Style IPA that was aged in sake barrels for a few months. Sake barrels are made of Japanese cedar. The beer was dry hopped in the fermentor and then again a second time after removing it from the barrels, right  before packaging. The finished beer has a beautiful citrus and tropical hoppiness, which blends perfectly with the fruity and citrus notes of the Japanese cedar.

The name Kagami-Biraki comes from the tradition of the sake barrel breaking ceremony that occurs at happy events like weddings and ceremonial openings.

Makoto Yamaki & Kamikene, artists from Japan who regularly work with Tamamura Honten Brewery, designed the label artwork.

We have a handful of kegs and will be pouring this beer on draft only at the Gigantic Taproom. We have a few empty bottles to show off the beautiful label artwork.

It’s a unique beer that will be available on draft at Gigantic for a limited time.
