Hopsteiner debuts new Sultana™ Hop Variety

Washington hop distributor Hopsteiner has announced a new hop varietal called Sultana™. Previously one of Hopsteiner's most popular experimental varieties, Sultana was known as #06277. Sultana is a cross breed between Nugget, Zeus and male USDA hop varieties first bred in 2006. Hopsteiner says the popularity of this new variety is because of its huge aroma

If you have ever cracked open a fresh can of pineapple chunks, you have a pretty good idea of what Sultana’s aroma profile is like.

This decade-in-the-making new variety is finally ready for the big time with expanded availability.

More info from Hopsteiner directly:

The parentage of Sultana™ is 50% Nugget, 25% Zeus, & 25% USDA male, lending great aroma characteristics in combination with resistance against disease. All of our proprietary varieties are bred to withstand the tests of time, focusing on superior sustainable properties and Sultana™ is no exception. Sultana™ hops are late-maturing with high yields, unique aroma, and great agronomical attributes.

When deciding Sultana’s name, we looked to the impressive Alaskan Range for inspiration. We wanted to find something as big and bold as the cones and flavor this hop produced. We found a mountain known to the Athabascans and original inhabitants of Alaska as Sultana™ - meaning the woman. Sultana™ is one of the largest peaks in the continental US and is the perfect fit for this enormous hop.
