Celebrate Japanese Beer Month at southeast Portland's There Be Monsters

Southeast Portland neighborhood bar "There Be Monsters" (near Revolution Hall) is hosting a Japanese Beer Month for all of September. The popular Buckman neighborhood spot is featuring over a dozen craft Japanese bottled beers, cans and rotating drafts.

TBM's second annual Japanese Beer Month welcome locals and explorers alike to note the end of summer and usher in a beloved Pacific Northwest autumn with brews from ‘across the other pond.’

There Be Monsters

Two years ago, TBM hosted their first Japanese Beer Month when the bar’s proprietor, David Griggs, moved back to Portland after living briefly in Japan. Born in England and having lived internationally his whole life, Griggs was enthusiastic about sharing what he had learned and experienced in Asia. He knew his bar, situated in its bustling and ever-changing inner Southeast location, was the perfect place to introduce his growing passion. Fellow owner, Don Wallace, and bar manager, Jason Linford, as well as the entire bar staff, were excited to help Griggs build and execute this special month.

“A neighborhood bar is a hotbed of friends and strangers sharing stories and creating new experiences everyday. When we first opened, we hoped to bring some classic British pub flavors and culture to our block,” Griggs explained. “Why not keep expanding our palate and traveling through beers!?”

TBM’s Japanese Beer Month hand-picked menu features 8 bottles and cans as well as 5 rotating kegs on tap and will run the entirety of the month of September. Food specials and pairings will be offered in addition to TBM’s normal menu with British-influenced gastropub fare. A full bar of spirits, which includes three Japanese whiskeys, are always available to help open the conversation as well.
