Von Ebert Brewing Wins GABF Gold, Celebrates Glendoveer Anniversary & Fresh Hop Release

Von Ebert Brewing wins a Gold medal for Obeisance at the 2019 Great American Beer Festival

Von Ebert Brewing has a lot to celebrate these days. From winning a Gold Medal at the Great American Beer Festival last weekend to the one-year anniversary of their Glendoveer location, to new draft and bottle releases.

Tom Cook opened a local outlet of Ohio-based Fat Head's Brewing in Portland's pearl district in 2014 but after a handful of successful years, decided to split ways with the brand and reopen as Von Ebert Brewing. While at first it appeared to be mostly a new look for the same space, it's now hard to imagine it was ever Fat Head's. Gone is the over-the-top midwest food and while the IPA's are as good as ever, it's a far broader selection of styles. Von Ebert Glendoveer location opened July of 2018, and the new taproom is equipped with a small brewery where former Commons brewer Sean Burke creates farmhouse, foeder, and spontaneous ales and clean, crisp lagers. With the Glendoveer brewpubs anniversary on the horizon, the timing for last weekend's Gold medal win is extra special. The winning beer Obeisance was the Glendoveer breweries first bottled beer release.

Obeisance was brewed as a tribute beer to Upright Brewing, brewed with Calamondins, better known as Calamansi or Philippine Lime, a hybrid of Kumquat and probably Mandarin Orange. Obeisance won the gold in the Specialty Saison category, a huge accomplishment for brewer Sean Burke at the less than year-old new Glendoveer brewery.

"We are incredibly elated to have received a Gold Medal at the GABF this year," says Obeisance creator and VE Glendoveer head brewer Sean Burke. "For it to be for the first bottle that we released from Glendoveer, makes it that much more special for us. There is a lot that go into these types of beers and having this kind of validation is very rewarding. We have such an amazing team across both breweries and we can't wait to folks to try what other we have in the works".

Von Ebert Brewing owner Tom Cook added, "I had some incredible beers at GABF this year and it is truly humbling to even have a beer hit the final table of competition, let alone a gold medal.  I am so happy for our brewers who put so much time and effort into this beer, and every beer, to come home with some validation that we are headed in the right direction.  Great beer doesn’t happen by mistake and I am thrilled for our whole team.”

FRESH HOP KVEIK

Last week, Von Ebert Brewing dropped a Fresh Hop Kveik on us. An unusual style of beer, especially as a fresh hopped version.

Kveik is a yeast strain that originated in the Nordic countries centuries ago and has been passed down through families for generations. Von Ebert purchased its strain from a yeast lab, and a very warm 95 degree Fahrenheit fermentation allows it to impact the beer in a very aggressive and fruit forward way. Fresh Hop Kveik was brewed with fresh Oregon-grown Amarillo hops. The final beer clocks in at 5.2% ABV and 30 IBUs, producing flavors of orange peel and orange candy.

VON EBERT GLENDOVEER 1-YEAR ANNIVERSARY

Von Ebert will celebrate the one year anniversary of their outer southeast Portland Glendoveer location with a week-long Glendo-versary October 14-19th.

10/14 ANGULAR MOMENTUM BOTTLE & DRAFT RELEASE

"We fermented this beer as a clean saison in stainless steel first. We then moved it into a brand new foeder made of American Oak. It sat in the foeder for 8 weeks picking up the flavor of the oak and rounding out the overall beer in general. After that we moved the beer back into stainless to dry-hop it with Australian Enigma hops. Finally we packaged it with brettanomyces." Sean Burke, Head Brewer
