Aquavit Week's 2020 Beer Collaborations and Pairings

The 8th annual Aquavit Week begins in Portland November 10 - 16th, 2019 and features a variety of beer collaborations and pairings. The Scandinavian spirit is a unique drink made with caraway and dill seed and known for distinct spicing that varies based on the maker, common spices include caraway, cardamom, cumin, anise, and fennel.

Aquavit Week is now an international celebration with events in Europe and North America, but it all kicks off in Portland on November 10th at Broder Nord. This north side outpost of the popular Broder bars and restaurants boasts Portland's largest selection of Aquavit with more than two dozen varieties. The party which runs 6-9pm will feature aquavit cocktails, Scandinavian food, a nordic toast and more. A portion of proceeds benefits the Immigrant and Refugee Community Organization. Come say “Skal!” with us! Tickets available here.

Snaps & Taps is the collaborative beer series that runs alongside the many more traditional spirit tasting and cocktail events of Aquavit Week. These special brews will be featured at the restaurants and bars below, each paired with a different aquavit. Plan a crawl to catch these before the kegs run dry!

Bantam Tavern joins Aquavit Week for the first time to feature Hopworks King of Norway Imperial IPA, fermented with three types of Norwegian kviek yeast and coming in at 7.8% abv. Find it paired with Norway’s Linie Aquavit, the aquavit famously aged at sea in sherry casks.

Broder Nord will offer a special pairing with Upright Brewing’s Herst Nacht Bruin. This is a seasonal brew full of historic character. 80% of the blend is an autumn saison fermented with Upright’s house blend of kveik, a traditional Norwegian yeast strain. The remainder is cacao-infused saison aged in sherry barrels. Taste it at the Aquavit Week Opening Party at Broder Nord and throughout the week for as long as it lasts, paired with Rolling River Brown Bear aquavit distilled in Portland, Oregon and aged in rye whiskey barrels.

Paydirt is offering the Scandinavian-inspired Alter Ego Lingonberry Cider. This cider is made with apples and lingonberries, coming in crisp, tart, and with balanced acidity. Enjoy it alongside Aalborg Taffel, the classic Danish aquavit with strong notes of caraway.

The Rookery Bar at Raven & Rose is featuring Breakside Brewery’s Lavender Fizz, a cocktail-inspired ale aged in Old Tom gin barrels and conditioned with lavender from Sauvie Island. Enjoy it paired exclusively with Raven and Rose’s cask-strength edition of Krogstad Gamle.

Vivian, the brand-new bar at KEX Portland, is celebrating Aquavit Week with KEX Brewing Ultra Strata Dry-Hopped IPA. It will be paired with Portland’s original aquavit, Krogstad Festlig, made with caraway and anise.
