Great Notion Brewing Ballard Opening in Seattle in 2020

3 year-old Great Notion Brewing is becoming one of the first Portland-owned breweries to open a Seattle location with Great Notion Ballard scheduled to open in 2020. Known as one of the first and best makers of hazy/juicy pale ales in the Northwest, Great Notion has also become celebrated for their pastry and dessert-inspired adjunct beers that stretch the limits of traditional beer flavors.

The company will open a 2,200 sq. ft. taproom and restaurant in Seattle's hip ballard neighborhood in the currently under construction Tommer building at 5101 14th Avenue NW, Seattle. That places Great Notion Ballard almost directly across the street from Reuben's Brews and in a neighborhood that already has around a dozen breweries.

Great Notion Ballard will have 20 taps, outdoor seating, a similar style and vibe to their NW Portland location and a food menu developed by their longtime chef Ryan O'Connor. The brewery expects to do 16oz canned beer to-go and weekly release parties in Seattle, just as they do in northwest Portland. Hours will be 11 am to 10 pm Sun-Thurs and 11 am to 11 pm Fri/Sat and they hope to be able to open in Summer of 2020.

"GNB is excited to bring their unique style to Seattle in terms of beer, business model and brand," says Great Notion co-founder Paul Reiter, expressing their desire to keep beer fun.

Great Notion Brewing began at the former Mash Tun brewpub on NE Alberta and expanded quickly. In early 2019 they opened a production facility with a canning line, restaurant and taproom in northwest Portland and recently announced they would be opening another taproom in Beaverton, OR. Great Notion will continue to focus on direct to consumer sales, eschewing classic distribution models with their new Seattle location.

“We are jazzed to announce that we will be opening up a taproom in Seattle,” says Paul Reiter, Great Notion Cofounder. “We can’t wait to join the Seattle market and all the amazing breweries already innovating like crazy! We frequently meet Seattle customers that drive 3+ hours every weekend to our can releases, so hopefully that is a good sign that more Northwesterners are curious about trying our hazy IPAs or beer that tastes like Baklava, peanut butter cups, or Tirimisu for example.”
