Brothers Cascadia Brewing opens Evergreen Pub in downtown Vancouver

One of Southwest Washington’s cult breweries has now opened its second location in downtown Vancouver, adding to this bustling beer scene just across the river from Portland. The new outpost for Brothers Cascadia fills the space of Mav’s Taproom, which recently relocated across town just east of 205. Before Mav’s, veteran beer fans will recognize the building as the former home of the Old Ivy Brewery and By the Bottle, even before that there was Salmon Creek Brewery. On July 11th, Brothers Cascadia officially opened their doors with a full food menu, large taplist, and beer to go. The move marks an exciting new chapter for the small Hazelwood Dell neighborhood brewery that has always prized itself on quality and locality.

Brothers Cascadia has always done an exceptional job with nearly any style they take on, and their twelve taps attest to the spectrum of offerings to try. On the lighter side you can go with the crisp Crazy 88 rice lager, Czech pilsner, Kolsch, or their County Clark dry Irish stout on nitro (a first for Brothers). If you want to keep it old school, they even offer a brown ale. But most people know Brothers Cascadia for their IPAs. There are plenty to try at the Evergreen pub, whether you want to go West Coast or hazy, imperial or sessionable, and anything in between.

What sets this location apart is the corridor patio and the fulfilling food menu. Unlike the original Brothers Cascadia which relies on food trucks for grub, the Evergreen pub fuses Mexican and Asian with traditional pub food while dropping in worldly touches here and there. This approach can be summed up by dishes like the Scotch Egg made with chorizo sausage and coated in panko breadcrumbs before being served with a curry aioli. Other standouts include pork rinds with the optional add-on of pub cheese for dipping, a Korean bulgogi-style steak sandwich, and a Oaxaca burger piled high with its namesake cheese, avocado, bacon, veggies and chipotle mayo. There are also salads, bar snacks, soup, and even the option to add broccolini instead of fries. Just like Mav’s, Brothers Cascadia has preserved the family-friend element with a kids menu and a handful of non-alcoholic options.

Also like Mav’s is the decor that is fairly straightforward and inviting while being mostly unchanged, though it could benefit from a little more decoration. Luckily, the weirdly awesome if not slightly creepy Anthony Bourdain-themed bathroom has been left intact.

The courtyard patio is a hidden gem tucked away from the street, if you are not at the Evergreen just for the beer and food then the patio on a warm-ish summer day is a great reason to visit. The narrow space is accessible from streetside glass doors, and enclosed on all sides with a lovely root system, lush vines, and a full tree that make it feel like a secret brick lined garden. The courtyard separates the Evergreen main pub and bar from the kitchen and a spillover/event space that used to be the By the Bottle shop which will now be used to host comedy and live music. The only downside is this uncovered area will be a real downer in the rainy season, and we feel for the staff running food between the kitchen and the bar through the elements.

Ultimately, this new location is a welcome expansion for the brewery founded in 2017 by Sherman Gore, Jason Bos and Richard Tiffany. The new space joins a flurry of craft beer activity in downtown Vancouver that includes a new satellite taproom from Vice Brewing as well Loowit, Heathen, Trap Door, Doomsday and more.
